As snow builds up on your roof in the winter, you might wonder when and if you should shovel it. There are a few reasons why you should shovel it off, first reason is ice dams. Ice dams are created by heat loss coming through your roof and melting the snow. This water then proceeds to run down your roof and freeze above the eves because there is no heat. Not only is this a problem because it is so much heavier than snow but the ice will also push underneath shingles and cause water damage to your house. While a thinner layer of fluffy snow can be good insulation for your house, a lot of snow can also be quite heavy. The weight of snow can vary greatly depending on density and amount of ice, but it is recommended to be shoveled off at 2ft.
How do we do it?
To start the snow gets pushed directly off the roof going with the slope. One to three inches gets left on the roof so as not to damage the shingles. Depending on the severity of Ice dams we may chip channels and put the roof melt down to make way for standing water. We then will clear all driveways, walkways, and decks as discussed. Last but not least we make sure the customer is 100% satisfied with completed work.
